Model UN is where I learned to argue a position I didn't choose, find the overlap between people who disagree, and speak to a full room without a script. It also took me to an international conference in Bilbao, where I was recognized as Best Diplomat.
What it involved
Most of Model UN happens between the speeches — in caucus, negotiating language with other delegates. Crisis committees add speed: the situation changes while you're responding to it.
- Committee debate and moderated discussion
- Negotiation and resolution writing in caucus
- Public speaking
- Crisis committee participation
- A BBC-style reporter role during a crisis simulation
- Co-chairing a historical committee
On the other side of the dais
Co-chairing a historical committee was a different skill entirely: running the room, keeping debate productive, and making sure quieter delegates got heard.
